Organized by:

3.      Balkan Botanic Garden of Kroussia

There were 130 participants from Europe and USA, Russia, Israel, Lebanon, Azerbaijan and Moldova, as well as the researches from the University of Banja Luka. Of the countries in our region, besides the Republic of Srpska, actually the Genetic Resources Institute of the University of Banja Luka, there were also participants from Croatia and Slovenia. In the congress we presented the paper "Botanical Garden and Park of Banja Luka University" by following authors: Đurić Gorana, Šumatić Nada, Došenović Ljiljana, Ćopić Mira, Stupar Vladimir and Davidović Jelena, and the presenter was Davidović Jelena.

The main theme of this congress was the role of botanic gardens in changing world as well as the role of botanic gardens in plant diversity conservation and protection, regarding main aims of the Global Strategy for Plant Conservation (GSPC). More information on this strategy can be found on the following link - http://www.cbd.int/gspc/ .

Besides the presentations of individual botanic gardens and their achievements, many papers were about endemic and endagered species of individual countries and regions, with special emphasis on rich flora of Greece and Aegean Region. Also regarding new trends in the world, the social role of botanic gardens is also changing so they become places of social meetings and education of individuals, families, associations and organizations that are not directly connected to scientific research in botanic gardens. Many botanic gardens organize different events: workshops, exibitions, performances and other types of educational events that help raise public awareness on biodiversity conservation.

The main problem in most botanic gardens is lack of financial assets for organizing social and educational events, and in many cases even for supporting basic garden activities especially in times of European and global economic crisis. Because of the above organisers provided several workshops that helped the participants to exchange their experiences and ideas and to identify main barriers for further growth and implementation of the GSPC.
